Srimushnam temple

The original image in marble is said to have been taken away by Krishna Deva Wodeyar of Mysore and installed it at Srirengapattinam. The front Mandapam called Purushasukara Mandapam built in the 17th century looks like a chariot with elegantly carved figures of warriors riding the horses and elephants.

The Nayaks who built the temple are illustrated in carved royal portraits on the pillars in the center of the hall. Srimushnam is one of the eight swayamvyuktha kshetras (self-existent) sacred places of divine origin. The Hoysala kings who ruled parts of South India built a temple at this place to depict this legendary phenomenon.Here, it is pertinent to point out an interesting feature. Evidenced by relics and records, a Muslim feudal lord was suffering from a painful tumour on his back. On the advice of scholar, a tahsildar, the Muslim lord prayed to Lord Bhuvaraha. The God appeared in his dream and he was rid of his ailment.Also, the ruler who had been childless for long, was blessed with a child. who built a mandapam at Killai.

This is one of the eight Vaishavas shrines. The image in the temple is self created (Swayam Vyakta) representing Varaha Avator. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu answering the prayers of his devotees assumed the form of a boar and vanquished the demons. Hence the Lord is called Bhuvaraha'. The front Mandapam called the Purushasukta Mandabam was built by the Nayaks in the 17th century and is noted for its architectural treasures.
