Kumbakonam nageshvara temple

Nageshvara Temple: Nageswaran Temple, a fine example of early Chola architecture, building technology and astronomy. The towns oldest temple, this is the site of an annual festival that celebrates the worship of the linga by the Sun. Niches on the sanctum walls contain exquisitely carved figures depicting the forms of Shiva, and scenes from the Ramayana. Nageswaran temple is also known as Koothandavar Kovil , is located near the old bus stand area and Adhithya Cholan of Chola Dynasty constructed this temple during 12th Century. The design and orientation are structured in such a way that it allows the sun rays inside the temple only during the Tamil month of Chithirai, therefore it bears another name called oorya Kottam or Keel Kottam .
